❖ Please maintain the restrooms & all public areas to the highest tah’arah possible.
❖ POLITE REMINDERS
Please PARK RESPONSIBLY so that maximum parking space is utilised without causing any inconvenience to our neighbours.
As we approach the days of Muharram, we would like to appeal to the Azadars to bear with us and help us with the flow of traffic and parking. It will be of great help if you can car share within the household.
Please let the volunteers guide you to the best place that you can park. InshaAllah we will have a shuttle service from the overflow areas and from Stanmore tube station
Unfortunately, we have been very inconsiderate in parking around the neighbours and are inconveniencing them. The month of Muharram is a month of Sacrifice and we request Azadars to give a little sacrifice and park in designated areas rather than around the neighbours’ houses and blocking their driveways.
We have employed 2 security guards who will be patrolling the Grove and the Pond area.
When leaving, please ensure you remain as quiet as possible as to minimise any disruptions to our neighbours
Let us prove to our neighbours we are true ‘HUSSAINI’

The KSIMC of London, Husaini Islamic Centre in Stanmore, was one of many centres in London that participated in Sadaqa day. In one hall, volunteers were seen collecting and folding clothes into bags to give to charity, children held stalls selling delicious handmade pastries and books were being organised to give to schools. Whilst in another other hall, members of the community lined up to donate something very different. Blood! Yes, you read that correctly!
Often the concept of charity is focused around monetary donation to the poor. However, charity can take many different forms, as seen through various narrations and traditions within the religion of Islam. For example;
Prophet Muhammad (saww) has said:
“The best form of charity is charity with one’s tongue through which lives are spared, adversities repelled, and benefits attracted towards one’s Muslim brother.”1
Imam al-Kadhim (as) has said:
“Your assistance of the weak is one of the best forms of charity”2
These narrations show that charity can come in many forms.
The Imam Hussain Blood Donation Campaign approaches the form of charity in a beautiful way – the act of giving blood. 475ml to be exact (that’s less than a pint!). And in the process, saving up to 3 adult lives or 7 infants! With males able to give blood 4 times and year, and females 3 times a year, blood donation seems to be a hugely underestimated way of regularly giving back to the community.
It would be erroneous to assume that this is less important than giving money, or worse, is ‘not needed’. We really need more people from Black African, Black Caribbean, mixed race, Arab and South Asian heritage to become blood donors to reflect the ethnic diversity of patients. Can you believe that even though 14% of the population of England are Black or South Asian, only 2.3% of people who have given blood in the last twelve months are from these communities?
This is why IHBDC has made it just that much easier for members of the community to donate blood. By bringing the session to your local place of worship.
This was the second session that has taken place in Stanmore, and there has been an increasing number of donors signing up to give blood Alhamdulillah. 84 inspiring people braved the snow to attend the session, with 74 successfully donating! The majority of attendees were new donors, and we saw many that had donated the first time returned to give blood again. This shows that not only is the campaign working in encouraging Muslims to take that step and donate blood, but holding sessions within our own centres is giving people the opportunity to donate again and again.
It is truly amazing to see the Muslim community coming together and giving in the way of God, and in the process, saving countless lives. We pray this continues in future, and the numbers of regular donors only increases with every session, insha’Allah.
This session highlighted the striking statistics that 1 in 6 are going to struggle with some kind of mental illness. 4-10% of people will experience anxiety and depression.
If we have a physical illness – we go to a doctor. But with a mental illness – we often don’t seek help from the relevant professionals. The reasons behind this are manifold ranging from embarrassment to perceiving mental illness as a sign of weak faith.
Our mental health is often the result of the balance (or imbalance) of all aspects of our lives. When one is overwhelmed or stressed this can trigger tendencies that one has which can manifest as depression or anxiety. The importance of self-care was emphasized – eating well, sleeping well, and exercising. The spiritual dimension can be a powerful curative and stabilising factor. Medication may also be necessary and should not be frowned upon. However, seemingly “simple” interventions like opening up to friends and family and seeking counseling can be powerful.
Past, present and projecting forward:
The final session drew on the previous two but also provided much new food for thought. There was a healthy discussion about how we parent our children. It could be argued that as a generation we raise our children in cotton wool and tell them that they are special. We give them whatever they want whenever they want. We either encourage competitiveness or no competition at all. For instance, when it’s sports day all the kids get a prize regardless of performance. Does this devalue winning?
When children move into independent life they realise they are not really special. They can’t get what they want when they want and need to work hard for what they want. This can have a serious impact on a child’s confidence and self-image. Increasingly we are finding that kids are growing up with reduced self-confidence and increased identity issues. Our children can mask their issues just as they do on Facebook and Instagram and only tell us what we want to hear not what we should and need to hear.
Today many of us see life as a problem to be solved rather than a life to be experienced. We postpone life rather than live it. We are juggling more and enjoying less. Instead of enjoying the abundance we tend to focus on what is lacking. We need to acknowledge and fill ourselves with the love around us and open ourselves to experience fully what is already there for us. The life that Allah has gifted us with.
We need to take time out to list the roles we play in life. Work is not just work. Within work we take on many roles, and at home we have many roles. The same applies to our volunteering roles.
Overall, the sessions provided a wonderful impetus to inward reflection as well as exploring ways to maximise our productive contributions to our relationships, families and the wider world.
The Executive Committee for KSIMC of London met on the 23rd of January for the second time this term.
This time, the meeting was moved to the main hall in Hujjat due to other events in the Annexe. Alhmadulillah for the second time we were able to have a full house with the enthusiastic team in full attendance. Even those not physically able to be here were able to dial into the meeting from far flung corners of the world and actively participate.
As is customary the first item on the agenda was the confirmation of minutes from the previous meeting. Speaking to members of previous EC’s, there is always the horror stories of meetings that head late into the night and offer only Fajr as a respite from the debates and discussions. Therefore, the team has decided to actively try to manage meetings to ensure discussions are focused and targeted. This may have been thwarted by the presence of chai, donuts, fruit and other snacks.
This month, the agenda was packed with updates from the team, projects and initiatives looking to be launched and insights reported back. The threat of Fajr loomed closer and closer and it seemed nothing could dampen the enthusiasm that comes in with a new team. Sweat could be seen dripping from the Chair’s face in trying to power through the agenda.
Donuts and chai consumed and armed with a full dose of guilt, the health board decided to pipe up and comment on how the EC should lead by example. This resulted in the EC agreeing to sign up en masse to the WF 10,000 step challenge and actively encourage our community to live a healthier lifestyle.
The Higher Education Department would like to invite you to follow in the Noble actions of Lady Fatemah (sa) in these days commemorating her martyrdom.
Lady Fatemah (sa) selflessly fed the needy, the orphan and the captive and we are collecting the food items listed on the poster below to give to needy families in North London.
Do please contribute to the best of your ability and invite friends of all faiths to join in. This is a good way of discussing the values of Lady Fatemah with them especially her selflessness in making the sacrifices.
Sadaqa Day – 20th March 2016 – 10:00 – 11:30am – Hujjat Ladies hall.
